This weekend we took a drive to the scenic Eastern Free State.
The road between Senekal and Ficksburg is very much in need of repair, but even dodging potholes could not have dampened our enthusiasm for this weekend away.
I am a great fan of old sandstone buildings, and the Bella Rosa bed n breakfast has sandstone and an abundance of old world charm and everything you would hope for in a little country inn, including friendly staff and a lovely home cooked breakfast, with lots of fresh fruit and CHERRIES!
Ficksburg is the cherry capital of South Africa, but I think Bela Rosa must have bought the last of them, as I searched in vain the entire weekend for a box of cherries, and could not find one.
We set off on our adventure after breakfast. First stop was “Die Blikplek” in Ficksburg which is a crazy mish mash of old rusted and re-claimed/recycled things, ranging from old potties and enamel bowls to bicycles and pressed ceiling panels which have been re-purposed into picture frames, mirror frames and even tables and chairs.
And then we were off again…The Green Goose Organic farm is about half way between Ficksburg and Rosendal and makes the most delicious organic cheeses, including their famous “Ficksburger”.
Rosendal is a beautiful picturesque little town with lots of traditional sandstone buildings, a beautiful gallery called Meerkat Kolonie, a couple of places to eat, interesting shops, a hotel and a museum. It is also home to a number of artists and crafters, have a look here for additional info.
Going nowhere slowly is definitely my favorite way to travel, exploring chatting to locals, unhurried and with a rhythm that each journey dictates as its own.
